About Erika

Erika Vink (b. 1987, Harbor City, CA) lives and works in Alkmaar, Netherlands.
Her figurative gouache paintings explore the tension between the intimate and the vast: domestic scenes inflected with the residue of distance, flight, and displacement. Before turning to painting full-time, she served twelve years as a pilot in the US Air Force, an experience that continues to inform her eye for scale, light, and the strangeness of familiar landscapes seen from above.

Her palette and handling of gouache draw on the Dutch tradition, from Rembrandt’s chiaroscuro to the observational precision of the Golden Age, while her compositional sensibility owes as much to photojournalism and cinema as to art history. The resulting work rewards sustained looking: subjects that appear straightforward reveal, on closer inspection, quiet tensions and unresolved narratives.
